Alright, you should read the Six Session Guru Yoga every day, three in the morning, three at night or you can do six times in one shot, it doesnt take very long. Then you fall to one extreme of either Only this is true or The other one is true. There are various depictions of what a Buddha is: Thats the way that a Buddha is described in Mahayana. For people who have taken the Yamantaka initiation and registered with us, we have an extensive collection of practice materials. The former emphasizes practices involving the energy-winds arising in subtle forms known as illusory bodies (Tib: sgyu-lus), which are the immediate causes for achieving a Buddhas body of forms (Tib: gzugs-sku, Skt: rupakaya). Each face has three large round eyes, bared fangs and frightful expressions; brown hair flows upward like flames. This is very, very dangerous, very delicate. Vajrabhairava is sometimes called just Yamantaka. The three right faces are yellow, blue and red and the three left are black, white and smoky. These are part of the commitments. So Dharmaraja, the King of Dharma, is also a name that is applied to Yama, who is then taken later into Buddhism as a protector (hes tamed by Yamantaka and made into a protector). As general background, we need to have just some general idea of what is tantra about. Tsongkhapa made it a very central practice because of its association with Manjushri. So Yamantaka is already one of the protectors on this wheel in Guhyasamaja as well as on this wheel in the Yamantaka and Hevajra practices. Remember this association of Yamantaka with Manjushri? Disaster. It tells us that there are many, many ways and many appearances of all these various Buddha-figures. So if you want to do these more advanced practices and so on, you have to have the strength of conviction, the understanding of reality (so Manjushri in your heart), and this forceful energy to be able to chase away interferences your confusion, your selfishness, and so on chase away the interferences and stay steady in your practice. In Buddhism there are many protector deities that have been incorporated, and many of them come from an earlier Indian non-Buddhist context (some even come from an Iranian context). When you talk about different cultures being present in one area, they dont exist in isolation, do they, in isolation from each other?. They built the Forbidden City and the Imperial City, and all these things, and it was envisioned and laid out like a Yamantaka mandala, and the emperor was Yamantaka in the center of this. Theyre all very qualified paths, its just depending on the method. From amongst the many lineages of practices to enter Tibet, two translators, Ra Lotsawaand Mal Lotsawa were known to have disseminated the main transmissions of Yamantaka. The principal practice texts come from Tsongkhapa (13-Deity) and Pabongka (Solitary Hero). Thats in the seventh century. Are they all the same person that you find in the Pali canon, that you find in the Mahayana sutras, that you find in the tantra texts? But just understanding it doesnt make you change but realizing it and it becomes second nature will provoke change. We have in Guhyasamaja, as I mentioned in my previous lecture about that, a whole different system of secrecy than we have here in Vajrabhairava. Whatever understanding, whatever positive force has come from this, may it act as a cause for all beings to reach enlightenment as quickly as possible through a sincere practice such as this Yamantaka system. And it works but not by some power of some magic or miracle. It gives it a context. Ive made offerings to Manjushri for you, for the success of your practice. The basic sahaja (two-armed) form of Vajrabhairava is blue-black in color, with the face of an extremely enraged buffalo; two sharp horns, with flames coming from their tips. Its not an easy trip., I always find it quite helpful to think of these things as actually happening, not just some legend. It should be given only to as few disciples as possible. There are either eight or ten directional protectors, and Yama is one of them. So Yamantakas practice is very, very powerful, extremely, extremely powerful for removing the self-grasping I that doesnt exist. The protectors are like a dog, a very vicious, powerful dog. So for us to realize that, for us to understand that intellectually is easy. But normally when we experience death, were totally unaware of whats going on we dont recognize the potentials and abilities of that subtlest level of mind. Secondly, Yamantaka is the most ferocious out of all the deities existent within the Tibetan pantheon of Buddhas. Yamantaka Empowerment As Part of Teachings in Bodhgaya. You had a mixture of Iranian culture and religions, Indian religions particularly the early Shiva worship and the Shiva tantras and you had Buddhism, so a mixture of the three. So the Second Buddha is called Gyalwa Nyipa. Because if you think that secret and hidden means this system of these vajra expressions, you become totally confused when you read the Yamantaka root tantra or the Chakrasamvara one and you see Well, its all explained there very explicitly. It includes numberless hell beings, preta beings, hungry ghosts, animals, and insects in numberless universes. Although practiced early on in Tibet by the Sakya and Kagyu Traditions, it was Tsongkapa, founder of the Gelug Tradition, who instituted Vajrabhairava as the principal Gelugpa meditation practice. They passed down the line of Vikramashila masters and there were many commentaries written to them in India. Gelug Tibetan Buddhist tradition. So one has to be very, very careful. And so you have a structure, which you get in Chandrakirtis commentaries to Guhyasamaja tantra, in which he gives the structure of six alternatives and four modes (mtha'-drug tshul-bzhi) for explaining these so-called vajra expressions. Ven. So with understanding, we want to cut through these grosser levels with all the confusion with a lot of strength and get down to the subtlest level. So Kalantaka, and then you have the Buddhist variant Yamantaka, the one that puts an end to Yama.. Psychologically very helpful. In order to overcome that confusion and laziness, we need the full understanding of reality in Buddhist terms, voidness that things dont exist in the impossible ways that our minds project. Why Ogyen? And he becomes a guardian of the hells. But now its with a totally calm understanding of reality that we can apply in meditation at this time of clear light in order to be able to get: If we do this often enough and strongly enough, were able to stay like that forever. Among these rituals theres the construction of whats called a weapon wheel, so a wheel of sharp weapons.. So we have this whole development within the non-Buddhist Indian context of Yama, the Lord of Death, and even putting an end to Yama in the Shiva complex.. Whats so special about this area that Guru Rinpoche comes from there, the tantras all come from there, and so on? One who has achieved Yamantaka, they simply say, I am Yamantaka.
